The Confessions of Nat Turner is part of three collections on DocSouth: "North American Slave Narratives," which includes all the existing autobiographical narratives of fugitive and former slaves published as broadsides, pamphlets, or books in English up to 1920 "The Church and the Southern Black Community," which presents a collected history of the way Southern African Americans experienced and transformed Protestant Christianity into the central institution of community life and "The North Carolina Experience, Beginnings to 1940" collects a wide variety of print and manuscript materials that tell the story of the Tar Heel State.A contemporary sketch of Nat Turner. ![]() They suggest that Turner and Gray's agendas conflict consistently in the text and thus create the ambiguity that has characterized the document for over a century and a half. In addition, literary critics have consistently pointed to discrepancies in Turner's language and tone throughout the document. However, as a slaveholder mired in financial difficulty, Gray likely saw tremendous profit and propaganda potential in satiating the public's thirst for knowledge about such an enigmatic figure. Thomas Gray, a lawyer, released the account, claiming that Turner had dictated the confessions to him and that there was little to no variation from the prisoner's actual testimony. Published as the definitive account of the insurrection and its motivation, the "confession" remains shrouded in controversy. The Confessions of Nat Turner appeared shortly after Turner's capture. He hid in the Dismal Swamp area and was discovered accidentally by a hunter on October 30. ![]() Nat Turner, though, eluded capture for over two months. Most of the rebels were executed along with countless other African Americans who were suspected, often without cause, of participating in the conspiracy. Over the course of two days, dozens of whites were killed as Turner's band of insurrectionists, which eventually numbered over fifty, moved systematically from plantation to plantation in Southampton County. In the immediate aftermath of the rebellion, however, many Southern states, including North Carolina, tightened restrictions on African Americans. It ignited a culture of fear in Virginia that eventually spread to the rest of the South, and is said to have expedited the coming of the Civil War. Nat Turner's rebellion was one of the bloodiest and most effective in American history. Similarly, a solar eclipse and an unusual atmospheric event are believed to have inspired his insurrection, which began on August 21, 1831. When he was in his early 20s, these signs led him to return to his master after an escape attempt. Turner was deeply committed to his Christian faith and believed he received messages from God through visions and signs in nature. Nat Turner was born Octoon a plantation in Southampton County, Virginia. October marks the anniversary both of his birth and of his arrest as the leader of one of the United States' most famous slave rebellions. Nat Turner is widely regarded as one of the most complex figures in American history and American literature. A Rebellion to Remember: The Legacy of Nat Turner ![]()

![]() Corrie ten Boom was one of the godliest, soul-rich individuals I’ve ever read words from. I think the rest of the world would agree. According to Jewish custom, celebrating the same day for both birth and death is the unique sign of a very special individual. At the age of 91, on that very same date in 1983, she also passed into Heaven’s gates. This past month on April 15th marked the birthday of the amazing woman, Corrie ten Boom. ![]() She later traveled the world as an evangelist, motivational speaker, and social critic, referring to her experiences in Ravensbrück as she offered solace to prisoners and protested the Vietnam War.Image courtesy: Ten Boom Museum Photo Album, Stock Footage by The Legacy of Corrie Ten Boom From Berlin, ten Boom journeyed across Germany by train until she reached the Netherlands, where she reunited with surviving members of her family.Īfter the war, ten Boom advocated reconciliation as a means for overcoming the psychological scars left by the Nazi occupation. Along with other released prisoners, she traveled by train to Berlin, where she arrived on January 1, 1945. The camp administration released Corrie ten Boom in late December 1944. In Ravensbrück, the sisters managed to stay together until Betsie died that December. In September 1944, the Nazis deported Corrie and Betsie ten Boom to the Ravensbrück concentration camp in Germany. The sisters remained in the Scheveningen prison until June 1944, when officials transferred them to an internment camp at Vught, in the Netherlands. Casper ten Boom became sick in prison and died in a hospital corridor only ten days after the arrest. Corrie ten Boom, her older sister Betsie, and her father Casper remained in prison. ![]() Altogether, the Gestapo arrested some 30 people in the ten Boom family home that day.Īfter holding them briefly in the penitentiary in Scheveningen, a seaside town close to The Hague, the Gestapo released all but three of the ten Boom family members. In addition, the Gestapo arrested several resistance workers who had unwittingly entered the house during the raid, as well as many family acquaintances who had been attending a prayer meeting in the living room. In the meantime, however, the Gestapo had arrested Corrie ten Boom, her father, her brother and two sisters, and other family members. Several days after the raid resistance workers transferred them to other locations. Six people, among them both Jews and resistance workers, hid in this hiding place when the Gestapo (German secret state police) raided the house on February 28, 1944. Using her job as a watchmaker in her father's shop as a cover, Corrie built contacts with resistance workers, who assisted her in procuring ration books and building a hiding place in the family home. Corrie became directly involved in these efforts when, along with her father and sister Betsie, she decided to hide Jews in the family home in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Various family members sheltered young men sought by the Nazis for forced labor and assisted Jews in contacting persons willing to hide them. ![]() In the late 1930s that nursing home became a refuge for Jews fleeing from Germany.Īfter World War II began, members of the ten Boom family became involved in resistance efforts. Her brother Willem, a Dutch Reformed minister assigned to convert Jews, studied antisemitism and ran a nursing home for elderly of all faiths. Corrie's grandfather had supported efforts to improve Christian-Jewish relations in the nineteenth century. Their religious activities had also brought the family a history of personal connections to the Jewish community. In her autobiography, ten Boom repeatedly cited religious motivations for hiding Jews, particularly her family's strong belief in a basic tenet of their religion: the equality of all human beings before God. The ten Boom family were members of the Dutch Reformed Church, which protested Nazi persecution of Jews as an injustice to fellow human beings and an affront to divine authority. Her defiance led to imprisonment, internment in a concentration camp, and loss of family members who died from maltreatment while in German custody. In resisting Nazi persecution, ten Boom acted in concert with her religious beliefs, her family experience, and the Dutch resistance. For her efforts to hide Jews from arrest and deportation during the German occupation of the Netherlands, Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983) received recognition from the Yad Vashem Remembrance Authority as one of the "Righteous Among the Nations" on December 12, 1967. ![]() ![]() ![]()
