The Roundabout Theatre Company presented the revival production in 2012. The Mystery of Edwin Drood premiered at the New York Shakespeare Festival in August 1985 and moved to Broadway with a revised version, where it ran until May 1987. At age 11, his love for mystery books led him to Dickens unfinished novel The Mystery of Edwin Drood. It was a modern “panto” complete with the cross-dressing “best boy” lead character and audience sing-alongs. At age three, he first experienced the theatre. The seminal experiences that influenced his creation of the musical were from Holmes’ childhood. Merrifield was so impressed with his “story songs” that she encouraged him to write a musical for the festival. Rupert Holmes was performing some of his “story songs” at a nightclub and following his performance, he received a note from Gail Merrifield (wife of Joseph Papp), the director of development for the New York Shakespeare Festival. Who would have thought that the singer-songwriter who wrote and performed the billboard #1, “Escape (The Piña Colada Song),” would be encouraged to write a full-length musical for the New York Shakespeare Festival.
